Rotator cuff tear

  • Separation of tendon and muscle surrounding shoulder joint
  • Symptoms may include shoulder pain and decreased range of motion of the shoulder joint
  • Caused by injury, repetitive activity or joint instability
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age
  • May be partial or complete tear

  • Avoid activities and movement that cause pain
  • Avoid inactivity, start with gentle stretching to prevent stiffness 1 to 2 days after injury

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen

 

FOR PAIN

  • At first, ice area for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day
  • After 48 hours, apply hot packs or heating pad to area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
