Intercare announces leadership transition as Managing Director Hendri Hanekom appointed CEO | 2 min read

Pretoria, South Africa, March 24 – Intercare today announced a leadership transition, with Managing Director Hendri Hanekom appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective 1 April 2026. This follows a carefully planned succession process and marks the first leadership transition in the Group’s 25-year history. Co-Founder and current CEO, Dr Hendrik Hanekom, will transition into the role of Executive Vice Chairman.

In this role, Dr Hanekom will remain closely involved in the business, supporting the Board and executive team, strengthening key stakeholder relationships, and providing strategic guidance. He will also lead the establishment and governance of Intercare International as the Group expands beyond South Africa.

“Intercare today is a well-established and trusted healthcare organisation, built on a strong and integrated foundation,” said Dr Hendrik Hanekom. “This transition reflects how far we have come and our readiness for the next chapter. I am confident that Hendri’s leadership will continue to strengthen our impact and position Intercare for the future”

Over the past several years, Intercare has strengthened its operating model, enhanced its customer-centred approach, and built the capabilities needed to scale. With these foundations in place, the organisation is well positioned to expand its services, continue innovating in care delivery, and explore opportunities beyond its current markets.

Hendri Hanekom brings deep knowledge of the organisation, strong commercial insight, and a valuable international perspective. He holds an MBA from IE Business School in Madrid and has gained experience working with leading global healthcare institutions, including Scripps Health and the Cleveland Clinic. With nearly two decades in the South African healthcare sector, he has played a key role in shaping Intercare’s direction and delivering on its strategy.

“I am honoured by the trust placed in me and excited to lead Intercare into its next phase,” said Hendri Hanekom. “Our focus is to continue building a healthcare model that is centred around our customers, improving access, experience, and outcomes. By combining this with disciplined execution, strong teams, and practical innovation in care delivery, we are well positioned to grow sustainably and expand our impact, both locally and over time, beyond our borders.”

Under his leadership, Intercare will continue to scale its integrated, value-based care model, strengthening its position as a leader in accessible, customer-centred healthcare, while ensuring it remains relevant to local healthcare needs and grounded in disciplined, sustainable growth.
