Intercare is preparing to open a 34-bed Physical Rehabilitation Hospital at Vergelegen Plein Shopping Centre in Somerset West in October, adding a specialised healthcare service to the Helderberg.
A new hospital is coming to Somerset West, Vergelegen Plein Shopping Centre, and I first became aware of the project earlier this year when Intercare announced that it was recruiting for the facility.
I reached out to Intercare to find out more about the planned hospital, including what it would offer, who it would serve and when the Helderberg could expect it to open. Intercare has now provided more details about the 34-bed Intercare Somerset West Physical Rehabilitation Hospital, confirming that it is scheduled to open in October 2026.
A hospital for the next stage of recovery
The hospital will focus on a part of the medical journey that can sometimes be overlooked: what happens after the immediate medical crisis has passed.
Following a stroke, serious injury, heart condition or major operation, an acute hospital focuses on stabilising the patient and treating their immediate medical needs. But going straight home is not always the next step. Intercare says many people require further medical care, therapy and support to regain their strength, relearn everyday skills and rebuild their independence.
The Somerset West facility will be dedicated entirely to physical rehabilitation following an illness, injury or medical procedure. Intercare specifically notes that it is not an addiction or substance-use rehabilitation facility.
For patients recovering from a stroke, rehabilitation could involve relearning how to move, speak or swallow. Someone with a spinal cord injury may need to develop new ways of managing everyday activities, while rehabilitation following a heart condition or procedure can help rebuild strength and fitness safely.
What will be at the new hospital?
The 34-bed hospital has been designed specifically for physical rehabilitation, with dedicated therapy gyms, patient rooms and recovery spaces.
Intercare says patients will be supported by a multidisciplinary healthcare team comprising doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and other healthcare professionals. The team will work together to develop an individual rehabilitation plan for each patient.
Depending on the patient’s condition, that rehabilitation can involve far more than simply rebuilding physical strength. Patients may need support to regain movement, communication, swallowing ability or the skills required to manage everyday tasks.
The next stage after hospital treatment
One of the things that stood out to me in Intercare’s explanation is the point at which this facility comes into the picture.
The immediate medical emergency may be over, but the patient’s recovery is not necessarily complete. For families, the transition from acute hospital treatment to rehabilitation can bring its own uncertainty, particularly when there are questions about recovery, returning home and what support may be needed.

A different kind of addition to the Helderberg
There is something fitting about the location. Vergelegen Plein is already an established part of everyday life in Somerset West, but the arrival of a dedicated physical rehabilitation hospital brings a very different kind of service into that environment.
For the Helderberg, the significance is less about another healthcare facility and more about having somewhere locally for the often lengthy and difficult work of recovery to continue. That is the gap Intercare is looking to fill, and it will soon become part of the Somerset West healthcare landscape.
