Bacterial infection that may affect the entire body
Symptoms may include rash, fever, muscle pain, abdominal pain, headache, vomiting and diarrhea
Spread to humans through a bite from an infected flea
May occur more often in the summer months due to an increase in flea population
Affects males and females
Can occur at any age
Can be mild to severe
More severe in those with a weakened immune system
Prior infection provides long lasting immunity from re-infection
Treatments
FOR FEVER
Apply cool cloth to forehead or armpits
Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee as these drinks can cause slight dehydration
Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Acetaminophen
Ibuprofen
Aspirin (Do not give to children or adolescents)

Apply hot or cold packs to the area
