Prostatitis, acute

  • Bacterial infection resulting in short term inflammation of the prostate gland
    Symptoms may include fever, chills, frequent urination, painful ejaculation and scrotal pain that may occur suddenly
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males only
  • Can occur at any age but more common in adults
    May be mild with no symptoms to severe
    Not life threatening

  • Take a warm bath
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, and acidic beverages and foods
  • Avoid cycling
  • Use a seat cushion or pillow when sitting

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
