Bacterial or viral infection of the inner ear
Commonly results from a blockage in the tube of the ear leading to fluid build up
Symptoms may include rapid onset of ear pain, fever, and redness of ear drum
Cannot be passed from person to person
Affects males and females
Can occur at any age but more common in infants and young children
May be mild to severe
Treatments
FOR FEVER
Apply cool cloth to forehead or armpits
Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee as these drinks can cause slight dehydration
Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Acetaminophen
Ibuprofen
Aspirin (Do not give to children or adolescents)
FOR PAIN
Apply hot or cold packs to the area

Distraction
