Optic neuritis

  • Inflammation of the nerve of the eye
  • Symptoms may include a change in color perception, eye pain and blurred vision or blindness
  • Caused by an autoimmune reaction or infection around the eyes and nasal sinuses
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in young adults to middle age
  • May be mild to severe

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
