Kaposi sarcoma

  • Cancerous tumors of the blood vessel wall
  • May affect the mouth and skin but may also involve other areas such as the digestive system or lungs
  • Symptoms may include tender lumps on the skin, reddish skin lesions and swollen glands
  • Most commonly occurs in individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • May also occur following organ transplants, blood transfusions or those receiving immunosuppressive therapy
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age
  • May be mild to severe and becomes life threatening as condition progresses
