Influenza

  • Very common viral infection that affects the respiratory system
  • Symptoms may include fever, head and muscle pain, tiredness and weakness
  • Spread very easily by breathing in infected droplets from the air or direct contact with infected person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more serious for the very young, elderly and pregnant females
  • Also, at risk are those with conditions such as asthma and heart disease or those who have a weak immune system
  • May be mild to severe depending on the strain of the virus

GENERAL THERAPY

  • Get plenty of rest
  • Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
  • Wash hands frequently
  • Humidifier in bedroom or take warm showers
  • Apply warm compress to cheeks and sinuses
  • Nasal irrigation with saline
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
    • Nasal decongestant sprays
    • Cough syrup, suppressant of decongestant
    • Cough drops

 

PRECAUTIONS AND AVOIDANCES

  • Get annual flu vaccinations
  • Avoid crowds during flu season

 

SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IF

  • If at risk of complications for antiviral medicine
  • You have a cough that brings up phlegm
  • Have a high fever
  • Have sharp pain when breathing deeply
