Condition in which there are abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood
May affect the entire body
Symptoms may include tiredness, irritability, depression, excessive increase in urine output and bone pain
Caused most often by an overactive parathyroid gland or cancer
Can also be related to some medications and conditions such as tuberculosis and leprosy
Cannot be spread from person to person
Affects males and females
Can occur at any age but more common in older adults
May be mild to severe depending on the cause
Treatments
Exercise regularly
Avoid smoking
FOR CONSTIPATION
Eat more fiber (1 tablespoon of raw bran with plenty of water at each meal)
Increase exercise (30 minutes per day)
Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
Over-the-counter laxative medicines (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Bulk forming laxatives
Stool softeners (emollient laxatives)
Lubricant laxatives
Stimulant laxatives
Saline laxatives
Enemas and suppositories
FOR NAUSEA
Drink clear or ice-cold drinks (avoid drinks high in sugar)
Eat light, bland foods (crackers or plain bread)
Avoid fried, greasy, or sweet foods
Eat slowly and eat smaller, more frequent meals
Do not mix hot and cold foods
Avoid activity after eating
Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Diphenhydramine
Cyclizine
Dimenhydrinate
Meclizine
FOR PAIN
Apply hot or cold packs to the area
Relaxation techniques
Distraction
