Henoch-Schonlein purpura (IgA vasculitis)

  • Inflammation of the blood vessels
  • May affect many areas such as the skin, joints, kidneys and digestive system
  • Symptoms may include a purplish rash, abdominal pain and joint pain and swelling
  • Cause unknown
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age but more common in school age children
  • Usually mild and resolves on its own
  • May become life threatening if complications such as kidney failure develop

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
