About
Condition in which the body is unable to control the body temperature in the normal range
Symptoms may include high fever, decreased or absence of sweating, weakness and confusion
Cause may be due to infections, salt or water depletion, excessive activity in hot weather or medications
Cannot be spread from person to person
Affects males and females
Can occur at any age but more common in very young and elderly
May be mild to severe
Life threatening if left untreated
Treatments
Move from direct sunlight
Remove unnecessary clothing
Get into cool shower, bath, or cover with damp sheet, then direct fan at the person
Place person on their side to expose as much skin area as possible
Apply ice pack to groin, neck, and armpits
Encourage intake of fluids and salt
Check temperature frequently
Do not immerse in cold ice water
Do not give Aspirin or Acetaminophen to lower temperature. It can cause other problems
Monitor level of consciousness
Wear lightweight cotton clothing to allow cooling
Get into air conditioning to cool off if possible
Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
Avoid being inside hot vehicles
Never leave anyone in parked vehicle in hot weather for any length of time
Exercise in early morning or late evening
Avoid consumption of alcohol and caffeine
SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IF
Patient becomes unconsciousness for longer than a few seconds
You have convulsions
You have problems breathing
You have confusion, severe restlessness or anxiety
You have a fast heartbeat
Your skin feels hot and dry, even in armpits
You have severe vomiting and diarrhea
