Grave disease

  • Disorder of the thyroid gland resulting in an increase of thyroid hormone production
  • Symptoms may include fast heart rate, tremors, irritability, weakness and excessive sweating
  • Caused by an improperly functioning immune system which may be due to factors such as iodine intake, stress, heredity or environmental factors
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in middle age
  • May be mild with few symptoms to severe and life threatening if left untreated

  • Maintain a healthy diet and weight
  • Exercise regularly, especially weight bearing exercises
  • Decrease your level of stress where possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and make time for relaxation
