Epididymitis

  • Inflammation of a segment within the testicles
  • Symptoms may include swelling and pain of the testicles or scrotum
  • Caused most often by bacteria but may also be due to injury
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males only
  • Can occur at any age
  • May be mild and without symptoms to severe
  • Not life threatening

  • Apply ice pack to scrotum to relieve pain
  • Bed rest for 1-2 days
  • Elevate scrotum on towel when lying down
  • Wear an athletic supporter
  • Avoid sex until inflammation has cleared up

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
