Inflammation of the urinary bladder
Symptoms may include cloudy or pus in the urine, pain with urination and increased urine frequency
Caused most often by bacteria or yeast but can be viral or fungal
Cannot be spread from person to person
Affects males and females but more common in females
Can occur at any age
May be mild without symptoms to severe
Treatments
Use heating pad over lower abdomen
Take a sitz bath for 15 to 20 minutes (a warm, shallow bath that cleanses the perineum)
Drink an increased amount of fluids
Avoid coffee, alcohol, soft drinks with caffeine, citrus juice and spicy foods
Urinate often
After bowel movement, wipe from front to back
Take showers rather than tub baths
Avoid bubble baths
Gently wash vaginal or anal area carefully
Empty bladder immediately after intercourse
Avoid feminine products and deodorant sprays in the genital area
Avoid use of spermicides along with a diaphragm for birth control
Avoid wearing tight or nylon underwear
FOR PAIN
Apply hot or cold packs to the area
