Congestive heart failure

  • Disorder of the heart resulting in decreased circulation throughout the body
  • Symptoms may include shortness of breath, ankle swelling, tiredness and a cough with frothy sputum
  • Caused by many conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure and other disorders that affect the muscle function of the heart
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in the elderly
  • May be mild to severe depending on the cause
  • May be life threatening if left untreated

FOR LONG TERM TREATMENT

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol
  • Maintain a healthy diet and decrease your salt intake to no more than 2,000 mg/day
  • Maintain a healthy weight; monitor your weight each morning
  • Moderate exercise regularly
  • Sleep with the head of your bed elevated or your head elevated on several pillows
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Use assistive devices such as walker, cane or shower seat if helpful
  • Decrease your level of stress where possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for helps
