Cerebral palsy

  • Group of disorders that affects the area of the brain that controls movement
  • Symptoms may include upper and lower extremity stiffness, paralysis with jerky uncontrollable movements of the extremities
  • Caused by injury to the brain of a fetus or young infant
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can be present at birth or occur during infancy
  • Symptoms may not be apparent until after one year of age
  • May be mild with few symptoms to severe and debilitating
  • May be life threatening

Use assistive devices for walking such as walker, cane or crutches.
