Vaginismus

  • Condition resulting in muscle spasms during vaginal penetration
  • Affects vagina and other groin or pelvic muscles
  • Symptoms may include vaginal tightening which makes sexual intercourse or vaginal penetration painful or impossible
  • Cause may be emotional factors if no physical problem is present
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects females only
  • Can occur at any age
  • May be mild to severe

  • Try switching positions during sexual intercourse
  • Communicate your feelings with your partner
  • Use a water-based lubricant
  • Try longer foreplay
  • Try getting used to penetration by using your finger, insert slowly and minimally at first and gradually increase penetration over time

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
