Tympanic membrane perforation

  • Tear or puncture in the eardrum
  • Symptoms may include ear pain and drainage from the ear that may be bloody, yellowish-green, watery or foul smelling
  • May be caused by injury or rare infection from a fungus
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age
  • May be mild to severe

  • Avoid cleaning ears with sharp objects
  • Avoid blowing nose
  • Place cotton ball with petroleum jelly on it in ear when showering or getting wet

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
