  • Symptoms may include severe sharp pain on one side of the face near the mouth or eye
  • Onset usually occurs before facial activity such as chewing, smiling or external stimulation
  • Cause unknown but occurs more often in those with multiple sclerosis or high blood pressure
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in the elderly
  • May be mild to severe
