Infection and inflammation of the tonsils
Symptoms may include a very painful sore throat, fever, voice changes and bad breath
Caused by a bacterial or viral infection but not all infections will develop into tonsillitis
Spread by breathing in infected droplets from the air or contact with contaminated person or object
Affects males and females
Can occur at any age but more common in school age children
May be mild to severe
Treatments
Get plenty of sleep
FOR SORE THROAT
Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
Use a humidifier
Use saltwater, gargle several times a day (½ – 1 teaspoon of salt to 250 ml/1 glass of warm water)
Suck on throat lozenges, hard candy, or popsicles
Over-the-counter pain medicines (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage)
Acetaminophen
