Tonsillitis

  • Infection and inflammation of the tonsils
  • Symptoms may include a very painful sore throat, fever, voice changes and bad breath
  • Caused by a bacterial or viral infection but not all infections will develop into tonsillitis
  • Spread by breathing in infected droplets from the air or contact with contaminated person or object
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in school age children
  • May be mild to severe

Get plenty of sleep

FOR SORE THROAT

  • Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
  • Use a humidifier
  • Use saltwater, gargle several times a day (½ – 1 teaspoon of salt to 250 ml/1 glass of warm water)
  • Suck on throat lozenges, hard candy, or popsicles
  • Over-the-counter pain medicines (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage)
    • Acetaminophen
