Subdural hematoma, acute

  • Sudden collection of clotted blood between the brain and the outer covering of the brain
  • Symptoms may include a sudden headache, confusion, vomiting and loss of consciousness
  • Caused by injury to the head which results in tearing of a blood vessel in the brain
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in the elderly
  • Life threatening if left untreated

FOR EMERGENCIES

 

If you are trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation):

  • Check for pulse and respirations. If both of these are absent, proceed with CPR as you were trained
  • If respirations are absent, but there is a pulse, proceed with rescue breathing as you were trained

 

If you are not trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

  • Call emergency services
  • If the person is unconscious, begin to push hard and fast on the center of the chest
