Restless leg syndrome

  • Abnormal feeling with urge to move the legs
  • Affects legs most commonly but may affect feet and arms
  • Symptoms include unwanted sensation to move legs most commonly at night leading to interruption of sleep
  • Cause unknown but may be due to lack of iron in diet, kidney problems or hereditary factors
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but occurrence increases with age
  • May be mild to severe and very uncomfortable

  • Take a warm bath, massage legs, and stretch to help relax your legs
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain good sleep habits
  • Avoid sitting or standing in one place for a long period of time

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
