Pulmonary embolism

  • Condition in which a blood clot lodges in one or more arteries of the lungs
  • Symptoms may include fast breathing, shortness of breath, chest pain and increased heart rate
  • Caused when a blood clot, most commonly from the leg, breaks loose and travels to the lung
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in females during or immediately following pregnancy
  • Can occur at any age but more common in the elderly who are hospitalized or on bed rest
  • Often life threatening even though condition may be without symptoms
