  • Long-term inflammation of the prostate gland
  • Symptoms may include low back pain, painful and frequent urination, difficulty starting urination, weak urine stream and scrotal or penile pain
  • Cause may be due to a viral, bacterial or fungal infection
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males only
  • Can occur at any age but more common in middle aged adults
  • May be mild without symptoms to severe
  • Not life threatening

  • Take a warm bath
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, and acidic beverages and foods
  • Avoid cycling
  • Use a seat cushion or pillow when sitting

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
