Portal hypertension

  • Increased blood pressure in the portal vein of the liver
  • Symptoms may include enlarged veins on the abdomen, abdominal pain, bloating and collection of fluid in the abdomen
  • Caused most commonly by liver disorders
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age but more common in middle age adults and in those with high alcohol intake
  • May be mild without symptoms to severe depending on the cause
  • May be life threatening
