Pneumothorax, spontaneous

  • Collection of air into the space between the lungs and chest wall
  • Results in a partial or complete collapse of the lung
  • Symptoms may include chest pain, shortness of breath and anxiety
  • Causes may include rupture of blisters on the lung or secondary to other lung diseases
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males and individuals who smoke
  • Can occur at any age but more common in middle age and elderly adults
  • Severe and can be life threatening
