  • Caused most commonly by gallstones or alcohol abuse but may be the result of abdominal injury or surgery, medications, infections or may be hereditary
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in middle age to elderly adults May be mild to severe
  • Can be life threatening
