Otitis externa, malignant

  • Severe bacterial infection of the outer ear canal and the base of the skull
  • Symptoms may include severe ear pain, swelling and tenderness of the earlobe, pus- like drainage from the ear and hearing loss
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age but more common in elderly and those with diabetes or a weakened immune system
  • May be mild to severe
  • Severe cases can spread and become life threatening

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
