  • Condition in which airflow is interrupted many times during sleep
  • Symptoms may include snoring and waking up by choking or gasping, tiredness, sleeplessness and daytime sleepiness
  • Cause may be due to heredity, being overweight, alcohol consumption and enlarged tongue or tonsils
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age but more common in older adults
  • May be mild to severe

  • Avoid sleeping on your back; instead try sleeping on your side or stomach
  • Avoid going to bed with a stuffed-up nose
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking and sleeping medicines
  • Keep healthy weight
