Nephrolithiasis, obstructive

  • Blockage of urinary tubes caused by stone from kidney
  • Symptoms may include rapid onset of low back pain, commonly occurs on one side
  • Caused by passing stones getting stuck in ureter resulting in a blockage of urine flow in the urinary tubes
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age
  • May be mild to severe leading to impaired kidney function
  • May be life threatening

Increase your fluid intake

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
