Myocardial infarction

  • Damage to the heart tissue due to lack of oxygen
  • Symptoms may include pain or pressure in chest, sweating, nausea, anxiety and shortness of breath
  • Caused by lack of oxygen to the heart muscle due to a blocked artery
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age but more common in middle age adults
  • May be mild with few symptoms to severe and life threatening

FOR EMERGENCIES

If you are trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation):

  • Check for pulse and respirations. If both of these are absent, proceed with CPR as you were trained
  • If respirations are absent, but there is a pulse, proceed with rescue breathing as you were trained

 

If you are not trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation):

  • Call emergency services
  • If the person is unconscious, begin to push hard and fast on the center of the chest
