  • Blockage of the intestinal artery
  • Affects the blood flow to the intestines
  • Symptoms may include intense abdominal pain and tenderness, stiffness of the abdominal muscles, nausea and loss of appetite
  • Caused by a blood clot in a main artery, arthrosclerosis, shock or heart failure
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in older adults
  • Life threatening medical emergency

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
