Melanoma, malignant

  • Cancer of the pigment producing cells found most commonly in the skin
  • May also be found in other organs such as the eyes, ears, intestines, mouth and genital mucous membranes
  • Symptoms may include skin lesions that are dark in color; have an irregular border or increase in size
  • Cause unknown but over exposure to sunlight is considered a factor
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age but more common in adults
  • Can be life threatening without early diagnosis and treatment
