Destruction of the retina in the eye affecting vision
Symptoms may include blurred vision, vision loss, blind spot or changes in peripheral vision
Cause may be due to long-term exposure to sunlight, smoking, alcohol consumption, diet or may be hereditary
Cannot be spread from person to person
Affects males and females but more common in individuals with blue or light-colored eyes
May occur at any age but more common in older adults
May be mild to severe resulting in blindness
Treatments
To help with visual acuity
use a magnifying glass
view large print on the computer
use mobile phone and/or appliances with large numbers
Wear sunglasses with UV protection when in the sun
Avoid falling or injuring yourself by removing rugs and items that can cause tripping Ensure adequate (natural) lighting in all rooms
Use caution when driving and traveling. Seek help from others if necessary
Avoid smoking
