Macular degeneration

  • Destruction of the retina in the eye affecting vision
  • Symptoms may include blurred vision, vision loss, blind spot or changes in peripheral vision
  • Cause may be due to long-term exposure to sunlight, smoking, alcohol consumption, diet or may be hereditary
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in individuals with blue or light-colored eyes
  • May occur at any age but more common in older adults
  • May be mild to severe resulting in blindness

  • To help with visual acuity
    • use a magnifying glass
    • view large print on the computer
    • use mobile phone and/or appliances with large numbers
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection when in the sun
  • Avoid falling or injuring yourself by removing rugs and items that can cause tripping Ensure adequate (natural) lighting in all rooms
  • Use caution when driving and traveling. Seek help from others if necessary
  • Avoid smoking
