Knee, meniscus tear

  • Tear of the connecting tissue in the knee joint
  • Symptoms may include swelling, tenderness, pain and instability or weakness of knee
  • Caused by injury or destruction of tissue due to aging
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males and athletes
  • Can occur at any age but tear due to injury is more common in young and middle age and tear due to destruction of tissue is more common in elderly adults
  • May be mild to severe requiring surgery

  • Avoid activities that increase pain
  • Elevate knee on pillow

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
