Inguinal hernia

  • Bulging in the groin area resulting from a weakness in the wall of the lower abdomen
  • Symptoms may include a bulge in the groin area which often increases with straining and groin pain
  • Cause of weakness may be due to strenuous physical activity or coughing or may be present at birth
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age but more common in adults
  • May be mild with few symptoms
  • May be life threatening if complications develop

Avoid heavy lifting

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
