Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura

  • Disorder that affects the platelets in the blood resulting in excessive bleeding
  • Symptoms may include easy bruising and bleeding from the gums and other organs
  • Cause unknown but may occur after a viral infection
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in preschool children
  • May be mild to severe with excessive bleeding or hemorrhage

FOR LONG TERM TREATMENT

  • Avoid alcohol
  • Avoid over-the-counter drugs that impair blood clotting function such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Avoid high impact and competitive sports
