Hepatitis, alcoholic

  • Inflammation of the liver caused by alcohol intake over a long period of time
  • Symptoms may include yellow coloring of the skin and eyes, pain in the right upper area of the abdomen, tiredness and vomiting
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but may be more severe in women and those with other risk factors such as poor nutrition or infections with the hepatitis virus
  • Can occur at any age but more commonly occurs in older adults
  • May be mild without symptoms to severe and life threatening
  • Can resolve or improve by avoiding alcohol
