  • Sexually transmitted bacterial infection
  • Affects the anal and genital areas such as the vagina, labia and penis
  • Symptoms may include genital and anal ulcers and swollen lymph nodes
  • Spread by sexual contact with an infected person
  • Can be spread from mother to infant during childbirth
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in middle age adults
  • May be mild to severe
  • May become life threatening if left untreated and spreads to other organs
