Gas gangrene

  • Bacterial infection that results in tissue destruction in the muscles
  • Infection can spread to other parts of the body especially to areas with poor circulation
  • Symptoms may include pain, swelling and a foul-smelling drainage from a wound, fever, low blood pressure and fast heart rate
  • Cannot spread from person to person
  • Affects males and female
  • Can occur at any age
  • May be mild with prompt treatment to severe leading to amputation or kidney failure
  • Life threatening if left untreated

FOR FEVER

  • Apply cool cloth to forehead or armpits
  • Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
  • Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee as these drinks can cause slight dehydration
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
    • Aspirin (Do not give to children or adolescents)

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
