Filariasis, lymphatic

  • Infestation of worms in the lymph system affecting the entire body
  • Symptoms may include tree trunk appearance of the leg and swelling in the leg or lymph nodes throughout the body
  • Caused by various parasites
  • Spread through bite of infected mosquito
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age
  • Typically, not life threatening

Foot care:

  • Wash twice daily
  • Elevate the affected limb
  • Exercise regularly
  • Keep nails clean
  • Wear appropriate shoes
  • All injuries to the feet must be attended to immediately
  • Apply Whitfield ointment between the toes
  • Use appropriate antibiotic cream to treat the wounds

 

Over-the-counter medicines for fever and/or pain (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):

  • Acetaminophen
  • Ibuprofen
  • Aspirin (Do not give to children or adolescents)
