Bacterial infection that affects the skin on the face and legs
Symptoms may include bright red rash, fever and chills
Caused by bacteria entering through a break in the skin such as a cut, scrape or insect bite
Cannot be spread from person to person
Affects males and females
Can occur at any age but more common in adults
May be mild to severe depending on degree of infection
May become life threatening in infants, elderly or those with a weakened immune system
Treatments
FOR FEVER
Apply cool cloth to forehead or armpits
Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee as these drinks can cause slight dehydration
Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Acetaminophen
Ibuprofen
Aspirin (Do not give to children or adolescents)
FOR PAIN
Apply hot or cold packs to the area
Relaxation techniques
Distraction
