Viral infection that may affect the entire body
Symptoms may include a fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes and head pain behind the eyes that may occur suddenly
Commonly spread through a bite of an infected mosquito
Affects males and females
Can occur at any age but may be more common in children who have not been infected with the virus previously
May be mild to severe but most cases resolve completely without treatment
Treatments
FOR FEVER
Apply cool cloth to forehead or armpits
Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee as these drinks can cause slight dehydration
Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Acetaminophen
FOR ITCHING
Avoid items or situations that cause you to itch
Moisturize daily
Use creams, lotions or gels that soothe and cool the skin
Avoid scratching
Cut fingernails short, and consider wearing gloves at night to prevent scratching
Use mild, fragrance free soap and laundry detergent
Cover area with cold wet bandages or take a cool bath
Over-the-counter medicines (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Hydrocortisone cream
Diphenhydramine
FOR NAUSEA
Drink clear or ice-cold drinks (avoid drinks high in sugar)
Eat light, bland foods (crackers or plain bread)
Avoid fried, greasy, or sweet foods
Eat slowly and eat smaller, more frequent meals
Do not mix hot and cold foods
Avoid activity after eating

Diphenhydramine
Cyclizine
Dimenhydrinate
Meclizine
FOR PAIN
Apply hot or cold packs to the area
