Deep vein thrombosis

  • Blood clot in a vein most often affecting the legs
  • Symptoms may include pain and swelling over the affected area
  • Cause may be due to injury of the blood vessel, immobility or sedentary lifestyle or can be related to pregnancy
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in females
  • Can occur at any age
  • May be mild without symptoms to severe and life threatening if the clot moves to the lungs

  • Wear compression stockings
  • Elevate affected leg on a pillow

 

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
