Conjunctivitis, allergic

  • Inflammation of the outer covering of the eye and the inner lining of the eyelids
  • Symptoms may include eye redness, itching and watery discharge from the eye
  • Caused by allergens such as animal dander and pollen, grass and weeds which may be seasonal
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females
  • Can occur at any age but usually occurs at young ages
  • May be mild to severe
  • Not life threatening

GENERAL THERAPY

  • Use of warm compress to eyes
  • Avoid rubbing eyes
  • Keep windows closed
  • Limit outside time if pollen count is high
  • Wash eyes with cool water when coming in from outside
  • Change cloths and shower after being outside
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Naphcon-A
    • Opcon-A
    • Saline eyedrops

 

PRECAUTIONS AND AVOIDANCES

  • Change bedding often
  • Use clean towel and washcloths daily
  • Eye cosmetics should be discarded
  • Avoid using anyone else’s cosmetics
