Increased pressure in a muscle most commonly affecting the lower area of the arms and legs
Symptoms may include extremity pain that may become worse with movement, swelling and numbness or tingling to the involved area
Caused often by trauma, burns or vigorous exercise
Cannot be spread from person to person
Affects males and females but more common in males
Can occur at any age
May result in permanent and severe disability such as loss of extremity or permanent nerve damage without prompt treatment
May become life threatening in severe cases
