Cholelithiasis

  • Formation of stones in the gallbladder
  • Symptoms may include abdominal pain most often in the right upper region, nausea and vomiting
  • Caused by minerals, protein or cholesterol forming solids within the gallbladder which may be due to heredity or nutrition
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in females
  • Can occur at any age but more common in older adults
  • May be mild without symptoms to severe pain and life threatening

  • Eat a high fiber diet including fruits
  • Decrease fat intake
  • Do not skip meals
  • Exercise regularly
  • Lose weight slowly. No more than 1 or 2 pounds a week
  • Maintain a healthy weight
