Viral infection that may affect the entire body
Symptoms may include joint pain and swelling, fever and rash
May have similar symptoms as dengue fever
Spread through the bite of an infected mosquito
Affects males and females
Can occur at any age but children may have milder symptoms
May be mild to severe but most cases resolve completely without treatment
Treatments
FOR FEVER
Apply cool cloth to forehead or armpits
Drink plenty of fluids (especially water)
Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee as these drinks can cause slight dehydration
Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Acetaminophen
Ibuprofen
Aspirin (Do not give to children or adolescents)
FOR ITCHING
Avoid items or situations that cause you to itch
Moisturize daily
Use creams, lotions or gels that soothe and cool the skin
Avoid scratching
Cut fingernails short, and consider wearing gloves at night to prevent scratching
Use mild, fragrance free soap and laundry detergent
Cover area with cold wet bandages or take a cool bath
Over-the-counter medicines (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
Hydrocortisone cream
Diphenhydramine
