Brachial plexus injury

  • Injury of the nerves in the neck and upper back
  • Symptoms may include upper extremity pain, numbness, weakness and paralysis on one
  • side
  • Cause may be the result of a minor injury, trauma, cancer or may be due to a difficult
  • delivery in newborns
  • Cannot be spread from person to person
  • Affects males and females but more common in males
  • Can occur at any age but more common in young males and athletes
  • May be mild to severe causing permanent complications requiring surgery

FOR PAIN

  • Apply hot or cold packs to the area
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Distraction
  • Over-the-counter medicine (refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage):
    • Acetaminophen
    • Ibuprofen
